I started Ginkgo Bioworks to harness the power of biology for great things, as biology can self-replicate, self-repair, and self-assemble with precision that engineering disciplines can only dream of.

At Ginkgo, we focus on improving the process of designing biology to make it smarter and more efficient.

Ginkgo Bioworks sold contracts to create genetically engineered organisms before they were built, using these contracts as proof of customer demand to raise millions from investors.

After much brainstorming, we decided that Ginkgo's mission would be to make biology easier to engineer, which defines us as a company beyond just our business model or products. The only reason to start a company is if there's a problem you're passionate about solving and you have a mission to accomplish.

I believe that creating a diverse workforce will strengthen our company, but we also need to focus on making Ginkgo a sustainable business.

We are exploring how to design all technological products as if they are part of the biosphere, envisioning a world where everything can be grown rather than built.

We have received many applications from hardware and biotech companies, and we are adapting our approach to support their longer growth timelines.

My design principle focuses on allowing organisms to flourish, creating a win-win synergy where the organism's growth produces beneficial byproducts.
