At Ginkgo Bioworks, we design microbes and organisms to specifications, and we were founded in 2008 with around 75 employees.

Ginkgo Bioworks sold contracts to create genetically engineered organisms before they were built, using these contracts as proof of customer demand to raise millions from investors.
